Make your own wild bird winter shelter for your feathered friends! During winter, non-migratory birds constantly have to eat to generate energy to keep warm. However, they can't eat at night, and sometimes will freeze to death if they don't have a warm place to sleep. These birds include chickadees, goldfinches, nuthatches, downy woodpeckers, and tipmice. Make them a cozy place to sleep at night for easy and cheap!
My mom and sister are the ones who made these. Even though they're not yarny in any way, they're still creative and a great, useful DIY - so I wanted to share!
You will need twig balls and little twig wreaths (available at any craft store), kitchen wire, and hay. Cut holes in the twig balls and stuff them with hay, making a little hollow for the birdies to sleep in. If you want to be a bit more crafty, take a twig wreath and create a shaped nesting spot with the wire. Stuff and weave with hay. If you can, attach a little twig perch for the exterior. Cut a few lengths of wire and make little hangers for your shelters.
Dab a little peanut butter inside for some bribery and hang those beauties up outside in a handy tree!
