Mosaic Felt

The strong colors in this yarn remind me of autumn. The shades all go beautifully together like an old Italian mosaic. This is the first time I've ever felted a hat. Still, it's nice and warm and loose. Here is the simple pattern.

US J/10 (6mm) crochet hook
Patons Classic Wool in Harvest (3.5 oz, 223 yds)
Yarn needle
Stitch markers

Hat is crocheted in continuous rounds. Keep your gauge loose. The pre-felted hat will be quite large.

Crown:

Ch. 2.
Rnd 1. Work 6 sc in second chain from hook. Place marker for beginning of round.
Rnd 2. 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3. *Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around. (18 sc)
Rnd 4. *Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around. (24 sc)
Rnd 5. *Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, place a marker in sc just made, repeat from * around. (30 sc)

The markers placed in Round 5 show where increases are made in future rounds. Move the markers up as each round progresses. In the following rounds, work 2 sc in each of the marked sts.

Rnds 6-13. *Sc in each sc to next marker, 2 sc in marked sc, repeat from * around. (78 sc at the end of Round 13)
Rnd 14. Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 15. Repeat Round 6. (84 sc)
Rnds 16-17. Repeat Rounds 14 and 15. (90 sc)
Rnds 18-19. Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 20. Repeat Round 6. (96 sc)
Rnds 21-23. Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 24. Repeat Round 6
Rnds 25-32. Sc in each sc around.

Brim:

Rnd 33. Repeat Round 6, working in back loops only.
Rnd 34. Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 35. *Sc in next 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc, repeat from * 5 times.
Rnd 36. Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 37. *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 18 sc, repeat from * 5 times.
Rnd 38. Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 39. *Sc in next 10 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 9 sc, repeat from * 5 times.
Rnd 40. Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 41. *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 20 sc, repeat from * 5 times.
Rnd 42. Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 43. *Sc in next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 10 sc, repeat from * 5 times.
Rnd 44. Sl st in each sc around.

Fasten off.

Set washing machine for hot wash and cold rinse. Wash hat with a little laundry soap and a few cotton T-shirts. It might take more than one cycle to get your desired effect, but I only had to put it through the washer once. I dried it on high for 20 minutes to get the right size. Weave in ends.

  1. hello. I am making your lovely hat with the wool you suggested :) I have a question about round 5 and the increase rounds.

When you say to move the markers up with each round.. which st do we move it to? the first of the 2 sc or the 2nd of the 2 sc? or does it not matter? Thanks for this pattern. Looking forward to finishing :)
